Dr Francis Owakah attended an International Conference organized by the Pedagogy University of Mozambique, Nampula Campus and CEMEC (The Centre for Studies in Mozambican Ethnology). This International Conference was dedicated to the late Alberto Viegas, a former Professor at the University. Besides being the ‘man of culture' Viegas led a life enshrined in the education and a profound cultivator values in Mozambican society, particularly Emakuwa culture. He died on 30 May 2014.

This International Conference under the theme "Modernizing Traditions' ran from May 27 to 30. The conference was attended by high profile delegates among them Madam Nilma Lino Gomes, Minister (Secretary) of Racial Equality Promotion Policies, Dr Tomaz Salomặo, third Executive Secretary of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), and, Victor Manuel Borge, Governor, Nampula Province.

 The topics discussed were of diverse interest, from Meteorology to Nuclear science, culture, traditional beliefs and values, empirical knowledge and local wisdom, local languages and technology, Xenophobia and economics, to how changing culture is affecting the quality of life in Africa.
