Overview

Philosophy of the Program

This program is premised on the widely accepted view that human rights education is an integral part of the promotion and protection of peace, justice, security and the dignity and development of mankind.  Human rights education helps to foster an understanding of the common responsibility of each individual in promoting human rights. In this respect, human rights education contributes to the long-term prevention of human rights abuses and promotes peace and sustainable development. 

Rationale of the Program

Today, there is a growing need for higher human rights education in the country and the region as illustrated in the increased participation by NGOs, civil society, media, governments and international human rights institutions in human rights.  This program is designed to train human resources in the practical application of ethical theory and policy analysis to complex issues in international affairs at the global level

Objective of the Program

The goal of the program is to develop professional practitioners with expertise in the key areas of human rights, namely; conceptual knowledge, theoretical knowledge, methodological tools and applied skills.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Admission Requirements

  1. At least an upper second-class honours degree in any field.
  2. Lower second-class honours degree with additional relevant training or evidence of research or work experience.
  3. Postgraduate diploma, provided the applicant satisfies the minimum requirements for admission for a Bachelor’s degree qualification

 Regulations for Credit Transfers

  1. A candidate may be allowed credit transfer for up to a maximum of one-third of the course units provided that such course units were completed in institutions recognized by Senate,   subject to the following conditions:
  2. Having passed similar course units at Master or equivalent level.
  3. Payment of appropriate exemption fees.
  4. A candidate shall be allowed exemption from course units for which credit transfer has been approved by the Director, Board of Postgraduate Studies.
  5. A request for the credit transfer and exemption must be made in writing, and addressed to the Director, Board of Postgraduate Studies, through the Dean Faculty of Arts, accompanied by officially certified supporting documents, including the institution’s syllabus for the relevant course units.
  6. No candidates shall be exempted from any core course units as described in this syllabus, even if they had undertaken similar course units previously in another institution.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

      Course Structure and Duration

The degree programme covers a minimum of four and a maximum of twelve (12)   semesters of fifteen (15) weeks each.

The program shall consist of either:

        Option 1: Coursework, examination and research project, equivalent to four (4) taught course units; or

        Option 2: Coursework, examination and thesis, equivalent to eight (8) taught course units.

OPTION 1: COURSEWORK, EXAMINATION AND RESEARCH PROJECT

Each course unit shall comprise 45 lecture hours.

Each candidate undertaking the programme by coursework, examination and research project shall:

Take twelve(12) taught course units comprising six (6) Core units, and six(6) others, at least four(4) of which must be from any one of the two specialization clusters stipulated in this syllabus.

 

OPTION 2: COURSEWORK, EXAMINATION AND THESIS

Each course unit shall comprise 45 lecture hours.

Each candidate undertaking the programme by coursework, examination and thesis

shall:

  1. Take eight (8) taught course units comprising six (6) Core units
  2. In addition, take two (2) other courses at least one (1) of which must be from any one of the two specialization clusters stipulated in this syllabus, and, one (1) elective.

Students’ Obligation

  1. The course shall be offered through course work, project or thesis.
  2. A learner shall attend forty five (45) contact hours of lectures for each course unit registered in a semester.
  3. The learner must attend at least 75% of the recommended lecture hours per unit whether face-to-face or online.
  4. The learner shall attend a mandatory orientation on e-learning.

Programme intake is once every year in September with the course duration
taking Two Academic Years

MODE OF DELIVERY OF THE PROGRAMME

  1. Face-Face Mode

The methods of instruction shall be interactive and shall consist of lectures, lecture-discussions, class presentations, seminars, tutorials, student-teacher consultations, supervised independent study, group projects, guest speakers, or any combination of these.

  1. Online Mode

The methods of instruction shall be interactive and shall consist of lectures, lecture-discussions, class presentations, seminars, tutorials, student-teacher consultations, supervised independent study, group projects, guest speakers, or any combination of these. All this shall be done through various online platforms

 

  1. Open, Distance Learning, and e-Learning (ODeL)

The Open, Distance and E-Learning programme will run for a minimum period of seven (7) semesters and a maximum of fifteen (15) semesters of fifteen (15) weeks each. This module is largely home and or office based and includes:

  1. Written Self-Instructional Study Modules. This includes;
  1. Study course materials e.g. booklets
  2. Relevant Literature
  3. Interactive devices and self-tests
  1. Mediated Technical Learning Materials for example: Audio Visual; E-Learning
  2. Limited face-to-face sessions to provide an overview of the course at the commencement of the semester, mid semester and revision period before examinations
  3. Support Study Centres at the University of Nairobi:
  1. Access to information through computers at the University of Nairobi and other resource centres
  2. Use of libraries at the University of Nairobi and other institutions
  1. Orientation
  1. Orientation on ODeL delivery
  2. Study, reading and computer skills
  3. Time management and techniques for handling assignments
  4. Mentorship, guidance and counselling
  5. Emphasis is on satellite centres that serve as a link between the University and the student in the following manner; registration, collecting reading materials, collecting results and programmes, examination information, posting timetables and holding session meetings.
