Scholars and students reflect on interfaith views of justice, peace, and happiness at the University of Nairobi, Main campus.
On June 19, 2025, the University of Nairobi’s Department of Philosophy and religious studies in collaboration with the International Institute for Islamic Studies, hosted a symposium themed “Peace and Justice: From Christian and Islamic Perspectives.” Held at UoN Towers, MLT 405, the half-day event brought together students, scholars, and religious leaders for dialogue on faith and justice.
Prof. Jack Odhiambo from the School of Arts and Social Sciences officially opened the event. He emphasized the importance of interfaith understanding in promoting peace, calling on universities to lead in building bridges across different worldviews.
Speakers from Christian and Islamic backgrounds shared how their faiths approach justice and peace. While Christians highlighted forgiveness and reconciliation, Muslims emphasized ‘Adl (justice) and Salaam (peace), showing strong shared values.
A special highlight was a presentation by Dr. Hassan Kinyua Omari on “Happiness in Islam.” He explained that true happiness in Islam is tied to justice, compassion, and community well-being. His talk added a spiritual depth to the day’s discussions.
The event was also graced by Dr. Patrick Nyabul, chairman Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies.
The symposium ended with a call for continued interfaith collaboration, showing that peace and justice can be pursued together through mutual respect and shared values.
