Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – February 2026. Dr. Hassan Kinyua Omari, Lecturer in the Department of Philosophy & Religious Studies at the University of Nairobi, participated in a high-level panel session convened under the Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar (SECAM) in collaboration with African Union policy stakeholders in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The panel session, held at the African Union policy engagement forum in Addis Ababa, focused on the theme “Water as a Human Right and a Common Good: Ethical and Policy Alignment.” The forum brought together faith leaders, AU representatives, policy experts, and development stakeholders to explore the intersection between ethical frameworks and continental water governance strategies.
During the session, Dr. Kinyua presented an Islamic ethics and social justice perspective on water stewardship. He emphasized that within Islamic teaching, water is both a divine trust (Amanah) and a communal right (Haq), principles that support conservation, equitable access, accountability, and responsible governance.
He further highlighted the importance of interfaith collaboration, community participation, and policy alignment in addressing water insecurity across Africa. Dr. Kinyua underscored that ethical leadership and values-based engagement can strengthen implementation of African Union water frameworks while promoting peace and sustainability in resource management.
The high-level engagement reflects Dr. Kinyua’s continued contribution to continental dialogue on ethics, governance, and sustainable development within Africa.
