As an academic watching our economic landscapes evolve from my desk at the University of Nairobi, I often look at institutional frameworks through the lens of sustainability and inclusivity. Kenya’s cooperative movement is one of the strongest pillars of our national economy, yet its future growth relies heavily on how effectively we open doors for diverse leadership. That is why the upcoming Women & Cooperatives Summit 2026 stands out as a critical milestone for our socio-economic development.
Event Overview: When and Where?
The two-day summit is scheduled to take place from March 26th to 27th, 2026, running from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM daily. This key sector gathering will be hosted at the Boma Inn Hotel Nairobi, located on Red Cross Road (Off Mombasa Road) in South C, Nairobi.
Brought together by a strong coalition of organizers—including Credence Africa , the International Co-operative Alliance Africa , the Co-operative Alliance of Kenya (CAK) , and Nairobi City County —the summit serves as a collaborative bridge between national policy, field practice, and academic discourse.
A Strategic Launch for Gender-Responsive Governance
At the absolute center of this year's summit is a major institutional moment: the official launch of the ICA Africa National Cooperative Gender Platform.
From our research at the University of Nairobi, we know that policy frameworks only succeed when they move from theory to practical execution. This summit is intentionally structured to strengthen women’s leadership pathways , advance institutional inclusion , and drive genuine governance transformation right across cooperative institutions.
Specifically, the core objectives of the convening focus on:
-
Launching and introducing the new ICA Africa National Cooperative Gender Platform.
-
Strengthening leadership pathways for women within cooperative networks.
-
Advancing gender-responsive governance models within the wider cooperative movement.
-
Fostering deeper collaboration between cooperatives, national and county government bodies, and international development partners.
Who is Joining the Dialogue?
A transformational agenda requires everyone at the table. The summit is bringing together a vibrant mix of key actors across the cooperative ecosystem, including:
-
Cooperative leaders, board members, managers, and professionals.
-
Women members actively driving daily operations.
-
Cooperative unions and federations.
-
Policymakers, regulators, and government representatives from both county and national levels.
-
Development partners and training institutions.
Prominent sector figures steering this initiative include Muthoni Njoroge, Executive Director of Credence Africa , and George Musembi, Chief Officer for the Department of Cooperatives at Nairobi City County.
Media, Collaboration, and Participation Details
For invited participants and county directors, the registration package includes full access to both days of the summit along with meals. Please note that transport and accommodation are not covered and should be arranged independently by attendees.
In addition to the main sessions, the event features a distinct knowledge-sharing initiative through the Credible Perspectives Podcast under the Credible Cooperatives editorial series. This offers an excellent opportunity for leaders and representatives to share direct insights on cooperative governance, leadership development, and organizational transformation.
To confirm your attendance or inquire about participating in the podcast feature, you can contact the Summit Secretariat directly via email at connect@credence.africa or by phone at +254 719 468 240.
As we prepare for these vital dialogues, it is my hope that our scholars, researchers, and sector partners engage fully with these transformations to build a more equitable, thriving cooperative movement across Kenya.
