February 26, 2026, will go down as a historic day for our department. During the annual University of Nairobi Staff Recognition & Performance Contracting Awards, the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies was officially honored with the prestigious Vice Chancellor’s Excellence Award as the Most Improved Teaching Department for the 2024/2025 Financial Year.
This recognition, presented by the Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. M. Jesang Hutchinson, PhD, is a profound validation of our collective focus, hard work, and determination to elevate humanistic and philosophical discourse at our institution.
A Victory Borne of Visionary Leadership
An achievement of this magnitude does not happen in a vacuum. It requires a steady hand, clear foresight, and an open-door policy that brings everyone together. We owe a massive debt of gratitude to our Chairman, Dr. Patrick Nyabul.
Since taking the helm of the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies, Dr. Nyabul has championed an environment of academic rigor, transparency, and mutual support. His leadership during the FY 2024/2025 performance contract cycle kept us aligned with the University's broader strategic goals while ensuring our core mission—molding critical thinkers and ethical leaders—remained uncompromised. Under his guidance, we streamlined departmental operations, enhanced student engagement, and pushed the boundaries of our research output.
The Power of a Shared Mission
While leadership sets the direction, this trophy and certificate are the results of an incredible team dynamic. This award belongs to:
-
Our Faculty Members: Who continue to deliver high-quality lectures, mentor students, and publish impactful research despite a rapidly shifting higher education landscape.
-
Our Administrative Support Staff: The unsung heroes who keep our offices running efficiently and ensure our students are well taken care of daily.
-
Our Students: Whose intellectual curiosity and commitment to excellence push us to be better educators every single day.
When we gathered to hold the trophy in our offices, the sense of shared pride was palpable. It was a tangible reminder that when a department operates as a family, transformative growth is inevitable.
Looking Ahead: The Journey Continues
In the fields of Philosophy and Religious Studies, we teach that self-reflection is the key to progress. Winning "Most Improved" is an incredible milestone, but it is also a challenge to keep climbing. We have set a new benchmark for ourselves.
As we look forward to the rest of 2026 and beyond, our department remains committed to fostering an inclusive space for critical thought, interfaith dialogue, and ethical scholarship that directly serves the Kenyan society and the global community.
Thank you to the University of Nairobi management for this honor, congratulations to Dr. Patrick Nyabul for his exemplary leadership, and hats off to the entire department. Onward and upward!
